A Stress-Free Guide: What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot in Melbourne

How to Choose the Perfect Outfits Without the Overwhelm

What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot (Without Losing Your Mind)

Let’s be honest—choosing outfits for your family photos can feel a bit like planning a royal wedding. There are so many questions: Should we all match? What about patterns? Can I just wear my favourite leggings and call it a day? (Spoiler: Probably not, but I respect the energy.)

The good news? Dressing for your family photo session in Melbourne.doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and some tried-and-true styling tips, you’ll have a wardrobe that looks amazing, feels like you, and—most importantly—doesn’t involve last-minute wardrobe meltdowns.

The Magic Ingredient: Keep It Simple & Stick to Neutrals

Neutrals are your best friend. They’re classic, they flatter every skin tone, and they keep the focus on what really matters- your family’s love and connection (not a neon green shirt stealing the show). Think soft tones like beige, cream, camel, olive, dusty blue, or warm greys. They create that dreamy, timeless aesthetic that looks good now and won’t make you cringe in 10 years.

But if neutrals aren’t really your thing and you love a bold pop of colour or a playful pattern - don’t worry, you don’t have to sacrifice your personal style for timeless photos (and I'm not here to break any colour lovers hearts!) The key is balance. Rock that deep red or mustard floral dress you’ve been saving, then complement it by dressing the kids in soft, neutral-toned outfits that subtly pick up a colour from your statement piece. Mixing in solid, earthy tones will tie everything together for a cohesive, stylish look. Keep reading for more tips on how to embrace colour while keeping your photos beautiful!

Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans (RIP, 90s family portraits). Instead, focus on a mix of complementary colors and textures that create a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy. Start by choosing one or two core colors as your foundation, then build around them with varying shades and tones. Incorporating different fabrics-like corduroy, linen, knits, and denim-adds depth and visual interest, making your photos feel rich and layered. When it comes to patterns, keep them subtle and avoid large logos or overly busy prints, as they can be distracting and take attention away from what truly matters-your family's connection (but if you're a pattern lover, don't worry-we’ll get to how you can use patterns beautifully!).

Tips for Picking the Perfect Outfits (with photos from real sessions)

01. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Sam, Daniel, and their kids—Indi, Nate, and Huxley—are dressed in the perfect mix of soft, neutral tones that feel effortless and timeless. The combo of warm beiges, creamy whites, and muted blues works beautifully together without feeling too “matchy.” Different textures, like Huxley’s cord overalls, Indi’s embroidered dress, and Nate’s linen shirt, add just the right amount of depth.
When choosing outfits for your photoshoot, comfort is everything - because let’s be honest, no one looks their best when they’re constantly tugging at a too-tight dress or squirming in itchy fabrics. And if those adorable little trousers you love only come in a size too big, skip them! The last thing you need is to spend the session chasing down a toddler whose pants keep slipping down!

The key is to wear something that lets you move, snuggle, and be fully present without distractions. With a little planning, you’ll not only look amazing but feel great too - because nothing ruins a photoshoot quicker like a toddler in an itchy knit!

02. Comfort is Key (Seriously, Don’t Skip This Step)

Quick tip: Love a chunky knit but hate the dreaded itch? Pop a soft sleeve vest underneath! It keeps things cozy without the discomfort, so little ones stay warm, happy, and focused on the fun-not fighting the itch!
Melbourne weather loves to keep us on our toes - one minute it's sunny, the next you're blue (not really but you know what I mean!). Dressing for the season and the location is a game-changer for your session. Think layers, that adorable linen dress for your daughter might seem perfect, but if a cool breeze rolls in and she’s shivering, it won’t be fun for anyone. A warm layer underneath or a cute knit to throw on can make all the difference. Cold kids = grumpy kids, and no one wants to spend the session negotiating with a cold toddler!

It’s also worth considering where we’re shooting! The colours of the landscape can make a big difference in how your outfits complement the scene. RJ Hamer is full of lush greens and earthy browns, which look amazing with rusts, creams, and warm neutrals. Meanwhile, Royal Park is all about golden fields, where soft, sun-kissed tones like oat, beige, and terracotta really shine. Taking a minute to plan with the location in mind can elevate your photos and create that effortless, natural look! The right outfit tones ensure you don’t blend in too much or overpower the scene, keeping the focus where it belongs - on you and your moments.

03. Dress for the Season & Location

The outfits in this photo flow effortlessly, complementing the golden tones of the setting. As the evening cooled, Annalise’s knit was added—not just to keep her warm but also to subtly tie in with the rich rust florals in Rochelle’s dress. Layering isn’t just practical for staying cosy, it also adds beautiful variety to your photos.
Letting kids dress as they like (within reason!) is one of the easiest ways to keep them motivated to get ready and excited for the session. After years as a nanny, my biggest takeaway was that kids love options and feeling in control—so give them two outfit choices and let them decide. The trick? You have to love both! That way, whatever they pick, it works. And if they’re set on a tutu and gumboots? Bring it! After 11 years of photographing toddlers (and being a seasoned haggler at heart), I’ve mastered the art of the deal. They can twirl in that tutu for 10 solid shots—then it’s time for a swap (and dad wears the tutu, just kidding - or am I!). A little compromise keeps everyone happy while still capturing those beautiful family photos. And if all else fails… bribery is always highly supported!

Three Colourways That Always Work

With comfort and coordination covered, it’s time to talk colour! The right tones can enhance your photos, making them feel polished, natural, and effortless. To take the guesswork out of outfit planning, I’ve put together three tried-and-true colour palettes, each designed to work beautifully in any setting. With mood boards to guide you, you’ll have an easy roadmap to choosing outfits that look cohesive and timeless - without feeling overly matched

Neutrals are timeless, When multiple people wear white, it can wash out the photo and make everyone blend together, losing the depth and contrast we’re after. Mixing in some different tones helps everyone stand out while still keeping that effortlessly cohesive look. Instead, mix in warm, soft neutrals.

01. Neutrals (But Not All White)

Pairing warm, earthy tones like mustard and rust with classic denim creates the perfect balance—adding pops of color for depth while keeping the look effortless and timeless.

02. Subtle Denim + A Pop of Colour & pattern

Want to add a little more personality? Start with one standout piece—a bold dress, patterned shirt, or statement skirt—and balance it with softer, complementary tones to keep the look cohesive yet effortlessly eye-catching.

03. One Bold Colour or Pattern with Complementary tones

01. Sunglasses: As cool as they look, sunglasses hide the eyes - the most expressive part of a photo! Plus, they’re highly reflective, and as much as I know we’ll get along, I’m pretty sure you don’t want me making a guest appearance in all your photos!

02. Apple Watches & Smartwatches: These little screens can be distracting in photos, catching glare or pulling focus from the real moments. Plus, the last thing you want is a reminder of that work deadline every time you look back on your beautiful family photos - best to leave it off for a more timeless feel!

03.Caps & Hats: Firstly, I love a good hat shot - hats are always welcome! But only for part of your session. They can cast heavy shadows over the face, making it harder to capture expressions (and, most importantly, those cute looks of love). So, bring the hat, but be ready to mix it up!

04.High Heels: I’m all for a glam up, but high heels and outdoor family sessions don’t mix! My sessions are all about movement - walking, playing, and dancing - so comfort is key. If we’re in a park or open field, heels can make things tricky (and no one wants to be sinking into the grass or struggling to keep up with their little one). Go for shoes that let you move freely so you can focus on the fun, not your footing

05. Neons: Neon colours might be fun for a dress-up party, but in photos, they have a mind of their own - casting bright colour reflections on your skin. The last thing you want is your child’s bright green T-shirt turning their face into a glow stick! (This look really only works for Elphaba, IYKYK.) Plus, neon can steal the spotlight from what actually matters—you and your connection. Stick to soft, earthy tones that complement the setting, not compete with it.
